In their March 2007 issue, The Artist's Magazine included Jeffrey Swaluk’s work in an article entitled, “25 Under 40, Young Artists Who Are Making a Splash.”
Known for his vibrantly colored plein air landscapes, Jeffrey creates paintings that celebrate the enjoyment of being outdoors. He was one of 40 artists invited by the Peninsula Art School of Door County to participate in the 2008 Door County Plein Air Festival in Fish Creek, WI. He returned to the school the following summer to lead a painting workshop, “Color Lessons of the Impressionists.” Jeffrey was honored by a Merit Award at the 2016 Clothesline Festival at the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester. He is a member of the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters and the Buffalo Society of Artists. His acrylic paintings and painting tips for artists may be viewed on his website: www.swaluk.com Here is some information I wrote on the presentation I'll be doing: Nature is infinitely complex. How can artists deal with this while painting? What can be done to reduce nature's complexity down to a manageable level? How can artists ensure that they will be communicating an idea about their subject rather than just copying it in a mechanical way? Value plans can help! In this acrylic painting demo Jeffrey Swaluk will demonstrate the incredible effectiveness of using value plans to explore compositional possibilities, capture convincing effects of light and shadow, create emphasis, and minimize the distracting elements in a scene. Many artists have heard of value plans but skip doing them in order to jump right in and get painting. However, value plans are a small investment of time up front that can save hours of frustration later in the painting process. Please attend this painting demo to find out how value plans can be useful to predict and ensure the success of your final painting. Come and welcome our talented guest Jeff Swaluk on Thursday, May 11! Our program for Thursday April 13 is Deanna Weinholtz, a watermedia artist from Western New York who is best known for her luminous landscapes and seascapes in watercolor and acrylics. Her creations have won national and regional awards and have been displayed in numerous exhibitions, galleries, and personal collections. A graduate of State University College at Buffalo with a degree in design, Deanna is a working professional fine artist. She shares her knowledge and love of painting through teaching online through her website, and in classroom for the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens. Deanna is an Exhibiting member of Buffalo Society of Artists where she is past Exhibitions Chair and served on the Board of Directors, a Signature Member in Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society where she is past Co-Chair of Exhibitions and served on the Board of Directors, and an Exhibiting Member in Pittsburgh Watercolor Society.
www.deannaweinholtz.com The artwork is "Holding Hope - Colorado Wildfires" watercolor on paper. This painting was a National Award Winner. On Thursday March 9th, WNY artist Michael Killelea will be EAAS’s guest demonstrator. His plein air paintings, headlined as “exquisite watercolors” in American Artists’ “Watercolor” magazine, have appeared in print, museums and exhibitions. His work and bio are included in the Smithsonian Museum and the Library of Congress, and he is among featured Western NY artists in the Burchfield Penny database. He is an exhibiting member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society and the American Society of Marine Artists. Killelea was also a member of the All Weather Gang.
“I am a fanatic about painting in plein air. There are great scenes all around us, and even under our noses. By forcing an artist to choose a subject from the endless variety of options, their design skill is strengthened. I will paint something very ordinary. It's what I call finding the extraordinary in the ordinary,” Michael Killelea. Meetings start promptly at 7 pm, but the doors will be open by 6:30 at the Aurora Senior Center to enjoy some social time and refreshments. All are welcome to join us!
My name is Laura O’Donnell. I live in East Aurora with my husband Colin, my daughter Ava, my son Gavin, and our dog Zoey. I have been teaching biology at Attica High School for the last 18 years. Although I am passionate about science, art has always been a large part of my life. I come from a family of artists who have all inspired me in their own way. My grandmother was an art teacher in Akron who still paints and displays her work in art shows. My mom is a skilled quilter as well as a Roycroft artist who paints the yellow rose on china. In recent years, my aunt has begun painting and showing her work in an art gallery in South Carolina.
It was while I was in college taking an art class that I learned of the bleach and colored pencil technique. Using a thick, dark color paper, you first paint in the highlights of the picture using various concentrations of bleach. Once the highlights are done, colored pencils are used to add different colors and shadows. After much practice, I found the results to be quite striking. For me, it is a perfect blend of the freedom felt when painting while using the bleach, balanced with the control gained while using the colored pencils. The East Aurora Art Society 68th Outdoor Fine Art Exhibit and Sale will be on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 & 25, 2023 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (both days) on the grounds of the East Aurora Middle School campus on Main Street (across from the historic Roycroft campus). For an application form please go to our website at: https://eaartsociety.weebly.com/
Our longtime art society member Linda Hall will discuss how her theory of painting has evolved over the years. As a self-taught artist, she has purposely strived to maintain a style uniquely her own. She prefers to paint a variety of subjects from local landmarks to things of the past with a vintage flavor all her own. You will find her art on rotation hanging at local libraries, galleries, as well as other venues in the Southtowns. Her work has earned many awards including the 2015 Buffalo Garden Walk poster. Linda will talk about her love of acrylics, her process, and how to find ways to create with more passion in painting. She will include a fun interactive hands-on activity, so please bring a few colored pencils, watercolors, or any other simple supplies you like to use to create basic color and lines.
Meetings start promptly at 7 pm, but the doors will be open by 6:30 if you want to come early. In the event of inclement weather, please check our EAAS Facebook or website that day for the latest news or closings. Let’s get out this winter and enjoy being together any opportunity we can! |
