On March 14th, the East Aurora Art Society's general meeting will welcome guest artist duo, Andy and Pam Russell.
Andy has been creating paintings based on dreams since 1975. The skies, foliage and architecture, but most of all the "perfect world" feelings were the starting points of his unique style called "Extended Realism." He achieves luminosity and vibrancy in his acrylic paintings by using transparent glazing techniques. He is an exhibiting member of the Buffalo Society of Artists. Pam Russell began teaching art in southern Ohio, and continued teaching at Iroquios Central HS in Elma NY. Many of her students have received awards and scholarships for their art or have had their work exhibited in such places as the Capitol building in Washington, DC and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. She enjoys painting in acrylic and watercolor, especially faces, and she has done commissioned work. The 2024 Spring Art Walk is on May 10th from 4PM - 9PM. The East Aurora Art Society will be showing at the West Herr dealership on Main St.
Artists are expected to show up NO EARLIER than 3:30PM to set up. Maps to be released shortly. On January 11th, EAAS will welcome guest artist Janet Vedder. She will show a few pieces of her work in a variety of media, watercolor and fiber. Her demo will be about Sumi-e Brush Painting, which is a Japanese form of painting that requires only three tools: ink, brush and paper. It is a beautiful art form that offers the opportunity to reflect nature’s beauty with a few brush strokes.
Janet has experience as a graphic artist, product illustrator and art educator. She has a B.S. in Art Education, Masters in Education and retired after teaching art for over twenty years. Vedder currently enjoys teaching art classes on the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, Arts Café in Springville, and Views Art Center Old Forge, NY. Her artwork is also at ERLO Contemporary on Main Street in East Aurora, NY. Meeting starts at 7PM, doors open at 6:30PM. In the event of inclement weather, please check EAAS Facebook page that day for updates or closings. 📍101 King Street, East Aurora NY HTP is exhibiting at Aurora Town Public Library, November 13 - December 29. The current show includes their studio and plein-air work, in a variety of media: acrylic, colored pencil, digital photography, oil, etc. Their framed pieces are displayed in the Community Room and small framed works are in the foyer Showcase.
Artists that are featured are: S. Cassidy Fundalinski, Linda Hall, Susan Rudnicky, Deb Radford, Sharon M. Bartell, Linda Ludwig, Susan Somerville, Sarah Tobin, Nancy Palmer Miess, Kathleen Pisaro. As much as this group loves to paint together outdoors, they have returned to their indoor “studio” for weekly painting sessions, at Holland Methodist Church, during the wintery months. Each artist works from their own reference materials, such as personal photographs and sketchbooks, to create new pieces or finish incomplete works. Members are a mix of a few novices with many seasoned artists. Years of maintaining a weekly HTP group-painting time (including informal critiques and travel-anecdotes) has created a nurturing environment for refining art skills. HTP is very grateful for the collaboration with the Aurora Library, which enables the community to view their finished pieces. Photos by Sarah Tobin. On November 9th, Buffalo Art Society member, Jeff Swaluk gave a very informative presentation on his methods of moving from photo realism to interpretive, nature-based, acrylic painting. He worked from an enlarged, good quality photo, creating to his own personalized visual notations and scribbles. Simplification, line, shapes, pattern and high contrast values were emphasized. His demo was educational for both beginners and seasoned artists.
Jeff has provided members with a PDF book with all of the information covered at the meeting. It can be accessed here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wy_MwCSSTM8zy6atQfsN9gl5ZKhNfIUv/view?usp=sharing Photos by Sharon Bartell. George Grace will do a copy of one of his existing artworks to show technique, share ideas about composition, show some prints of his artworks, talk about color mixing and employment of acrylics to either a canvas or masonite. He will also answer questions about the profession, how to enhance exhibition acceptances/awards, etc. A little bit about George: While he lived in Tennessee, he won several awards, gave a pastel demonstration, conducted several workshops, and became just the fourth member in its 50-year history to achieve Signature status in the first three consecutive Central South Exhibitions. In March 2002, he and his wife moved back to Buffalo. In 2003, he was accepted into the Buffalo Society of Artists and served four terms as president, enacting some of the most notable changes in its 130-year history, including the Video Archive Project and a collaborative book on the first 125 years of the BSA (the latter in progress). He has judged numerous exhibitions, including the Allentown Festival, and the West Seneca, East Aurora, Buffalo-Niagara and Hamburg Art Society art exhibitions. As an art author, two of his articles were published in Pastel Journal, one—with cover and feature article—in Art Calendar, and another in Artis Spectrum: Soho Journal of the Arts. In 2008, he received a city commission to paint eight electrical traffic switchboxes—seven on Hertel Avenue, one on Bidwell. His work has been displayed in numerous galleries. Locally, the Albright-Knox, Burchfield-Penney, the Steel Plant Museum, the Castellani, the Carnegie, the now-defunct Eminent Design, Roswell Park CCC, and others. In 2012, he formed a partnership with artist/Fine Arts League President/Lancaster School District Arts Academy Chair Nancy Mariani and his wife Donna to open the Meridian West Art Gallery on Hertel Avenue, which hosted, over two years, twenty exhibitions, fifteen poetry readings, a writers’ workshop, and private art classes. Reminder that the Fall Art Walk is tonight from 4-9PM. Stop by the West Herr dealership to see our artists work!!
