Buffalo artist, Carol Siracuse, will be the guest presenter at East Aurora Art Society’s June 9th meeting. Carol attended Harvard Graduate School of Design and Princeton. Her architectural career spans practice in Boston, Ithaca and her own Chautauqua firm. In 2001, she moved to Buffalo, NY. Carol retired as vice president at Cannon Design in 2010. Retirement opened the opportunity for her to work as a watermedia fine artist, in her own private studio, plein-aire or on her many travels.
Siracuse is a signature member and past president of Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society and also exhibits with Buffalo Society of Artists and Western New York Artists Group. Meibohm Fine Arts, in East Aurora, featured Carol Siracuse’ s work, with three other watercolor artists, in a recent show, Luminance, April 29-May 28, 2022. Laura Cott, owner of La Cott Fine Art, in Orchard Park, gave an enlightening presentation at East Aurora Art Society’s May 12th meeting. Laura discussed her love of patterns in nature and displayed samples of her framed digital prints and original watercolors. Her intuitive soft focus landscapes paired perfectly with her thin, light maple shadowbox frames. Laura gave a wonderfully detailed, step-by-step demo on assembling a floating mat and then shadowbox framing her digital print of her own original art. While effortlessly fielding members’ spontaneous questions throughout the evening, Cott gave an additional short demonstration, utilizing wet into wet painting techniques in watercolor. Even the veteran watercolorists in EAAS learned some useful new tips through Laura Cott’s sharing of her knowledge via excellent communication skills! It was a well presented and informative program. We felt inspired in your painting and how you present our beautiful artwork. Laura, thank you for spending the evening with us!

Our program is by the talented Laura Cott, artist and owner of LaCott Fine Art, a painting and education-based small business living and working in Western New York. Cott grew up in Western NY and graduated from Buffalo State College with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts degree in painting. She specializes in watercolor and mixed media painting, focusing on original paintings, prints, cards, and home decor pieces. Work is inspired by natural elements, celebrating minimalistic design, color combinations, linework, and patterns found in nature. She works closely with other creative minds and businesses in her community to pursue the teaching of the arts while fostering her passion for creating, painting, and making every day. Laura plans on doing one of her signature landscapes or florals, and then a framing tutorial. Don’t miss this exciting program! Last week, I got a last minute call that Deanna was sick. We all hope she is recovered and we look forward to rescheduling with her soon.
So if you missed last week's meeting, here was the program. East Aurora Art Society’s guest artist, Sarah Tobin, presented a program about her father, WNY artist David Foster Pratt (1918 - 2020). His modern, interpretive oil paintings and watercolors, reveal a fanciful and all encompassing love of urban and rural scenery. The majority of David Pratt’s work was of Buffalo and surrounding areas. New England summer family excursions scenery and a New Jersey harbor site rounded out the presentation. David Pratt large family required his ability to juggle his love of fine art with full-time carpentry, frame making and landscaping. As Director of the Art Institute in Buffalo, Pratt encouraged his friend, Charles E. Burchfield, to also teach there, in1950. Other artist/friend participants at the Art Institute included Robert N. Blair and Joe Orfeo. Pratt’s numerous on site sketches: fifteen minute, simplified, compressed perspective scenes in pencil, charcoal, ink and conte crayon were the basis for many of his paintings. David F. Pratt’s artworks are included in collections at Burchfield-Penny Art Center and Meibohm Fine Arts as well as in private collections throughout the country. East Aurora Art Society meets on the second Thursday of every month, September - June, 7:00 pm, at the Aurora Senior Center, 101 King Street at Oakwood, East Aurora.
